The mindset shift that made strategy games click for me

The mindset shift that made strategy games click for me

May 20, 2026 · Mikael Sørensen

For a long time I played strategy games badly without realizing why. I was always reacting — patching the hole in front of me instead of asking where the next hole would appear.

The shift happened during a tower defence run I kept failing. I started asking, before each wave, 'what is going to hurt me two waves from now?' Suddenly my spending made sense. I was building for the future, not the present.

This translates everywhere. In army-based strategy, it means scouting and reserving units for a counterattack instead of throwing everyone at the first contact. In management games, it means laying infrastructure before you need it.

The practical version is simple: spend thirty seconds between turns or waves just thinking. Don't tap anything. Ask what changes next and prepare for it. That pause did more for my win rate than any specific tactic.

Strategy games reward patience over reflexes. Once I accepted that, they got a lot more fun and a lot less stressful.
