Can serious strategy games actually work on a phone?
I spent a month playing nothing but strategy games on my phone, partly out of curiosity and partly because my laptop died. The results were more encouraging than I expected, with some clear limits.
Touch is excellent for slower, grid-based strategy. Tapping a tile and dragging a unit feels direct — sometimes more intuitive than a mouse. Games that embrace a planning phase, where you queue orders before the action, translate beautifully.
Real-time strategy is where the cracks show. Managing many units at once gets fiddly, and fat fingers cover the very things you're trying to click. The best titles solve this with smart grouping and a slow-mo command mode. The worst just shrink a desktop UI and hope.
My advice: look for games designed for touch, not ported to it. You can usually tell within the first mission. If you're constantly mis-tapping or zooming to hit a button, move on.
The genre is in a better place on mobile than its reputation suggests. You just have to pick the ones that were built with a thumb in mind.
