The best mobile genres when you only have five minutes
Phones are for small gaps of time: a queue, a bus, a kettle boiling. Some genres handle those gaps gracefully and some punish you for daring to put the phone down.
Arcade games are the obvious winners. Rounds are short by design, and titles like Coin Strike let you drop in, clear a board, and leave without losing progress. No ceremony, no energy wall.
Tower defence is better than you'd think, as long as you can pause mid-wave. The planning phase is a natural stopping point, and a single map rarely eats more than ten minutes.
Where short sessions struggle is big RPGs and simulators. They want your attention for a long stretch, and stopping mid-mission often means forgetting your plan by the time you return.
My rule of thumb: if a game lets me quit instantly without anxiety about losing progress, it's a good short-session fit. Everything else I save for the couch.
